Tsachkhuri Archangel Church
A shrine of family and fertility, home of the Tsachkhuroba festival.
The Tsachkhuri Archangel Church stands on a green mountain slope above the Tekhuri river valley. Before Christianity there was a Tsachkhuri fortress here and a pagan idol called Moske. "Moske-Tsachkhuri" means "giver of sons" in Megrelian.
Legend says St Andrew the Apostle raised a stone cross on this spot. A church was built in the 7th century; the building that survives today was renovated in the 18th century. Inside is the icon of the Archangel, called "Moske-Tsachkhuri".
Every year, on the Thursday of Easter week, the church hosts Tsachkhuroba. Childless couples come from all over Georgia with cradles and dolls to pray for a child.
